I’ve Been Where You Are
Starting and owning a business can be challenging. You’re trying to make ends meet, fulfill your passion, help your customers, and deal with countless challenges along the way. Some are minor. Others can feel crushing when you’re building without much guidance.
Things become even harder when nobody is showing you the ropes or teaching you the proper skills needed to improve your odds of success. Everything is more stressful when you feel like you have to do it alone. No one to hold you accountable. Nobody who deeply cares whether you succeed or not. This founder reflection comes from Brian's firsthand experience, because that was his reality at multiple stages of his career and business journey.
In several past jobs, especially startup roles, the expectation was simple: learn the product on your own, go sell it, hit quota, and figure the rest out without real mentorship. No training. No best practices. No accountability. Sink or swim.
When Brian started his writing coaching business, he also had very few people to bounce ideas off. Nobody around him had built something like it. Many lessons had to be learned alone, and the experience and skills gained came through self-directed work.
Not All A Sob Story
The story changed whenever strong mentors entered the picture. At 17, Brian worked at a technology store where one of the top salespeople took him under his wing and taught him sales. That mentor recommended psychology and sales books, encouraged him, and helped him understand people better.
Within a few months, Brian became the number one cashier at his store in extended warranty sales and earned a promotion to the sales team. That early mentorship built confidence, purpose, and a clearer sense of where his natural strengths could take him.
The Things My Mentors Did For Me
That is the power of a mentor. The best mentors encouraged Brian, taught him new things, pushed him to improve, and called out mistakes so he could get sharper. They brought accountability, perspective, and growth.
That experience is a huge reason why Brian is so passionate about coaching and mentoring others now. He understands the value of having someone who can help you see opportunities, improve your messaging, strengthen your sales skillset, and keep you moving when the path gets difficult.
